Review: A ‘Killing Eve’ That No One Was Asking For
The Beast Below was the second episode of series 5 of Doctor Who. This episode also brought up some of the past interactions with royalty that the Doctor had in his other incarnations and what effects they’ve had, seen with the introduction of recurring character Liz Apparently, the Doctor had become well-known by the 21st century; he is accepted enough to the point where he can park his TARDIS in the Queen’s garden. This episode was the first time that the Doctor’s “promise” to himself was mentioned. As he could only see a horrible compromise as the only way to make things right, the Doctor stated that he wouldn’t be worthy of the title he chose, which means “never cowardly, or cruel; never give up, never give in”. However, the Doctor soon finds something amiss onboard the vessel.

From masters of disguise to temptresses and chimeras, Charlotte Hodgman tracks down some of the weird and wonderful creatures that roamed the medieval world — and imagination — for BBC History Revealed. The medieval world — largely unknown and full of danger — was difficult for people to understand. The boundaries between the living and the dead were far more blurred than they are today, and all manner of spiritual beings were believed to be locked in constant battle for the souls of the living.
Only God and the Church were thought to provide divine protection from such terrors, and it was through both that medieval men and women sought to comprehend, and survive, the world. Perhaps nowhere else is this fascination with the meaning of nature and its relationship to God as evident as in medieval bestiaries. These illustrated compendiums of beasts popular in the Middle Ages, — like bestiaries of ancient times — described the characteristics of all manner of creatures, but also explained them in terms of their place within the Christian world.

The painting, found in Indonesia, is the earliest-known example of cave art. By Sara Rigby. A 44,year-old cave painting discovered in Indonesia is believed to be the earliest known hunting scene to be uncovered. The image portrays a group of part-human, part-animal figures — therianthropes — hunting large mammals with spears or ropes. The team of archaeologists, led by Griffith University in Australia, who made the find say it sheds new light on the origin of modern human cognition.
Published in the Nature journal, their paper describes the ancient painting in a limestone cave on Sulawesi as our oldest-known rock art. The figurative depiction of hunters as therianthropes may also be the oldest evidence for our ability to imagine the existence of supernatural beings. Prehistoric cave art provides some of the most direct insight available into the earliest storytelling.
The Upper Palaeolithic cave art of Europe — around 21, to 14, years ago — encompasses the oldest images previously known of humans and animals interacting in recognisable scenes. The monochromal paintings appear to show human-like figures hunting six animals — two pigs and four dwarf buffaloes. At least eight small human-like figures with spears or ropes appear with the animals.
